6th Raiffeisen Danube Open in Aschach/Danube from 26. 12. 1997 to 31.12. 1997 (7 rounds swiss system)

For the sixth time an international chess tournament took place in Aschach/Danube - this is a small village 25 km west from Linz/Austria. 243 chessplayers from different countries took part. This tournament was divided into two groups as last year. In the A-tournament 110 participians - 5 GM, 5 IM and WGM Agnieska Brustman - played for a price fond of ATS 100.000,--. The highest rated players were GM Vladimir Epishin (2570) from Russia, Ilija Balinov (2560) the Bulgarian who lives in Austria and GM Beim Valeri (2570) from Israel.

In the first two rounds there were only two surprising results (Teske-Zoister draw, Balinov-Tober 0:1). So after round four GM Beim leads with 4/4. The leadership after six rounds was taken by the top four of the tournament and IM Peter Schmidt and IM Nikolaus Stanec with 5 points. After quick draws in the pairings IM Stanec- GM Beim and IM Schmidt- GM Hertneck, the tournament favorit

GM Vladimir Epishin could win the tournament and the price money of ATS 20.000,--

with a convencing win with the white pieces against Ilia Balinov.

WGM Agnieska Brustman reached 5 points and only loss to GM Epishin and Balinov with the black pieces.
